French Canada
There's something in the air, beyond the mellifluous tones of the French language. Something about the way people greet each other, the prevalence of superb bakeries and neighborhood cafés, the artful way a scarf is slung over the shoulder, the openness in each smile. You find yourself humming down the street, taking longer walks, trying new things, and staying out later. The infectious spirit of French Canada is alive in communities all across the country. The Rockies Rock!
These majestic mountains form a boundary between B.C. and its neighboring province of Alberta. Calgary is only an hour away by plane but when we go to visit relatives there we'll do the ten hour drive if we have time because the scenery is just breathtaking. Interesting spots along the way include the little town of Golden between Glacier and Yoho National Parks and Revelstoke where tours of the Revelstoke Dam are available. The region also has a number of natural hot springs resort areas such as Radium Hot Springs and Fairmont Hot Springs.
Some of the other towns worth visiting are Kimberley, the highest in Canada and Fort Steele, a turn of the century gold rush town.
It's not unknown to spot grizzly bear, elk or moose along the road or in one of the National Parks.
This region gets lots of snow in the winter and chains are recommended for vehicles traveling during that time.
There are many parks that are worth exploring. Glacier National Park has over 400 glaciers within its boundary and the elevation for much of Top of the World Provincial Park is over 7200 feet. One of my favourites is Yoho National Park which contains lovely Emerald Lake. The run off from the surrounding glacier is what gives Emerald Lake its distinctive blue green color. The lake is very calm and there are canoes and kayaks for rent, as well as an easy three mile walk along its perimeter, Emerald Lake Resort is a rustic lodge that was built in 1902 and the restaurant is near the water's edge. We had lunch here one day and the food was good but the view was the main attraction.
A camera is a must in this region since the scenery is so picture postcard perfect. Roger's Pass in Glacier National Park is especially scenic and I'd also recommend the area around Yoho.

When in Montréal, look down and you'll see double. That's because this is really two cities in one. Above ground is the largest concentration of stores in the country, underneath lie miles of commercial space; every nook and cranny filled with more shops and boutiques. Then there's downtown's famous alter ego: the underground pedestrian network. Directly under the heart of the city lie 33 kilometres (20 miles) of brightly lit, scrupulously clean passageways, linking thousands of boutiques, major hotels, restaurants, universities, dozens of office buildings and attractions. Rugged mountain terrain and alpine vegetation make the area around the Columbia Icefield exceptionally beautiful, but temperatures are cool and winds are often strong. Showers of cold rain are frequent, and wet snow is always a possibility, even in midsummer. Be sure to pack an extra sweater, gloves, and a jacket with a hood.
